Title: The Fascist Roots of Migrant Labor Exploitation (joint with G. Dipoppa and S. Satyanath)

Abstract: In this paper we seek to explore variations in the presence of institutions that are exploitative of migrant labor. Specifically, we focus on variations in the modern presence of labor racketeering in a developed country (Italy). Using a regression discontinuity design we find labor racketeering to be strongly associated with prior exposure to fascist propaganda that emphasized the inferiority of various ethnic groups.
