Abstract

In this seminar, the multi-stage capacity expansion problem in electricity generation and energy storage systems is analysed. Three different aspects will be addressed. First, we will present the stochastic formulation of a multi-stage capacity expansion model in electricity generation units and show the computational efficiency of using an implicit formulation instead of the usual scenario-stage formulation. Second, we will present a clustering technique able to capture both the variability and the temporal correlation among the daily operating parameters, which are the wind and solar production and the electricity consumption along the year. In a context of renewable-dominated power systems, to consider an accurate representation of the daily operation is crucial for the investment decisions. Finally, we will present a realistic case based on the European power system. Specifically, the expansion strategies towards 2050 suggested by the European Commission are analysed by including stochastic dominance constraints in the capacity expansion model. Multiple numerical results will be shown.
